Everyone has a light and dark side...

I was cleaning my room and saw a bookmark that I made last year. The design was a pair of wings, one representing "goodness" and the other "evil." They folded in half on top of the page to be marked and magnets on the back kept the wings closed (the idea came from a great friend of mine ^^). Seeing them again, I felt inspired to make a miniature copy for that friend who presented me with the idea. You see, I'm graduating this year while she'll be a senior next year, so I'm still coming up with parts of my farewell and thanks-for-being-such-an-amazing-friend gift for her.

Description

I was cleaning my room and saw a bookmark that I made last year. The design was a pair of wings, one representing "goodness" and the other "evil." They folded in half on top of the page to be marked and magnets on the back kept the wings closed (the idea came from a great friend of mine ^^). Seeing them again, I felt inspired to make a miniature copy for that friend who presented me with the idea. Instructions

  1. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195019 dscn1046

For how to make the angel wing, see my other project Celtic Butterfly Pendant.

  2. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195042 dscn1049

Begin by grabbing your thicker black wire and using your angel wing as a guide to for shaping the top and bottom loops.

  3. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195123 dscn1051

Curve the wire up so that it goes along the right edge of the wing.

  4. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195137 dscn1052

Bend the wire back like so to shape the first finger (literally what they're called for bat wings, according to my brief google search...). Notice where it is bent relative to the angel wing behind it.

  5. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195248 dscn1056

Create a small loop/bulge to mark the end of the finger. Notice that the loop is a bit farther out that the bottom most finger.

  6. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195327 dscn1057

Curve the wire up so that it goes along the right edge of the wing.

  7. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195348 dscn1060

Bend the wire back again to create another finger, and add a loop to mark the end of the finger. Again, the loop is a bit farther out than the loop below it.

  8. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195430 dscn1062

Curve the wire back up so that it goes along the right edge of the wing.

  9. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195448 dscn1064

Bend the wire back yet again to create another finger, and add a loop to mark the end of the finger. This time, the loop is a lot farther out than the loop below it. Cut the wire short after you curve the wire back up so that it goes along the right edge of the wing.

  10. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195536 dscn1065

Curl the cut end into a small loop.

  11. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195636 dscn1067

For the webbing, you'll need the thinner black wire. Attach one end to the smallest finger.

  12. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195656 dscn1068

Begin wrapping the wire around each finger.

  13. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195740 dscn1069

Continue.. Make sure that the thin wire in between fingers is a bit curved inward

  14. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195751 dscn1072

Wrap around the last finger and cut the wire before using pliers to clamp the cut edge as close to the rest of the wings as possible.

  15. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195904 dscn1073

Using the same method, add another layer of webbing.

  16. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195920 dscn1074

Add yet another layer to finally complete the demon wing!

  17. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 195944 dscn1080

Use your thinner black and silver wires to attach the two wings together.

  18. Small 101853 2f2014 05 17 200338 dscn1082

To transform this into a pendant, simply slip a jump ring through a loop and add a necklace chain. There you have it -- a pair of wings to adorn your neck (or to present to the friend who inspired the bookmark idea in the first place; I hope she likes it!)
