I did this set for my cousins first grandbaby. It was alot of fiddly stitching together so it is fancy enough to become an heirloom! The pattern is $8 from craftsy.com and was well written with easy color substitutions so I was able to pull the whole thing out of my stash. I found the best way to approach this monster project was to work straight through the booklet beginning to end. All single crochet, lots of room for improvisation.
Because it is for a 1yr old baby I embroidered details like eyes and mouths but I could see 6mm safety eyes might be cuter.
