Description

Make a reversible hat and vest for American Girl dolls (or other 18" dolls)! Note: This pattern was adapted from a similar pattern in The Quilted Clothing Collection by Ed and Stevie Baldwin (pg. 41).

Instructions

  1. Small 109905 2f2015 07 14 003614 100 4522 5b2 5d

Print out the patterns and cut them out. Make sure they are printed to scale, not resized (uncheck "Fit picture to frame").

  2. Small 109905 2f2015 07 14 003658 100 4521 5b1 5d

Pin the patterns to the dark fabric (taking the grain of the fabric into account) and cut out according to the directions on the pattern pieces. Then do the same with the light fabric.

  3. Small 109905 2f2015 07 14 012953 100 4523 5b1 5d

Pin the two dark hat pieces together (right sides together) and, using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew around the outer edge of the circle. Pin the dark vest pieces together (right sides together) and sew along the shoulders and the sides, leaving the arm holes open. Then do the same with the respective light pieces.

  4. Small 109905 2f2015 07 14 012626 100 4527 5b2 5d

Clip the curves in the hat and around the bottoms of the vest for easy turning.

  5. Small 109905 2f2015 07 14 013052 100 4529 5b2 5d

Pin the light and dark pieces, right sides together. Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew along the edges, leaving a space open for turning. Do NOT sew the arm holes yet!

  6. Small 109905 2f2015 07 14 014027 100 4532 5b1 5d

Turn the pieces right-side out and, turning the fabric under by 1/4", whip-stitch around each arm hole. Do the same for the remaining gaps in the fabric.

...and the hat in detail. (I added an embroidered embellishment before pinning the light and dark fabrics together.)

BONUS: If you save the inside pieces of the hat brim, you can make a matching purse for your doll as well! Just sew them together as you did the hat, turn them right-side out, fold it in half to look like a taco, and sew up the sides part-way (leaving the top of the "taco" open). I added a small snap on the inside to help it stay closed, and two eyes from a hook-eye closure on either side to which I tied a length of ribbon. I tied the ribbon at the top to make it look like it was meant for a bigger doll, giving the illusion that my dolly is borrowing "Mommy's" purse!
