This is a fun, arty take on a portrait which lets you get creative with costumes and accessories. The trick is to position yourself perfectly in the frame for each shot so the multiple exposure will stitch you and your superhero alter ego together.

You Will Need (5 things)

  • Lomo'Instant Camera
  • Instax Film
  • Tripod
  • Dark Fabric for the background
  • Costume accessories

Steps (8 steps, 15 minutes)

  1. 1

Begin by setting up the Lomo'Instant. Switch the camera on to the C setting for Creative Mode with the flash off.

  2. 2

As we'll be taking a close up portrait, slide the Focusing Zone Setting to 0.4m – 0.9m.

  3. 3

Slide the MX Switch Button to MX mode so you can take multiple exposures.

  4. 4

Finally, because we're shooting against a dark background, set the Exposure Compensation Dial to +2 to help brighten up the shot.

  5. 5

Pop the camera on a tripod and prepare your background. We want a nice dark background that won't interfere with our shot too much, so if you don't have a dark wall, throw up a piece of black fabric or clothing in the background.

Pick out some accessories or a costume for your alter ego to wear in the second shot and have them nearby so you can grab them without moving out of position between shots.

  6. 6

The first shot, will be a normal portrait but we want to keep the details of the shot to the left hand side. Use the mirror on the front of the camera to position yourself nicely to the left of the frame. Strike your pose and press the Shutter Release Button to take your first shot.

  7. 7

Now, without moving from position, get dressed in the accessories of your alter ego and use the mirror on the front of the camera to position yourself to the fright of the frame. Strike your pose and press the Shutter Release Button to take your second shot.

  8. 8

Finally slide the MX Switch Button away from MX mode and your photo will print.

This can be quite a tricky shot to get just right so don't worry if you have to have a few attempts before you get a shot you love!
