Why not just paint some circles and then cut the sheet in half? Well, that would be the easy way. I like to think of these paintings as sisters, not twins. When you paint each half separately, you can make slightly different colour choices and create two unique pieces of art that complement each other. Your finished piece Slice an agate in half and you won’t find perfect circles. Hold the brush loosely to copy those wavy, natural lines.

Instructions

COMPOSE AN AGATE DIPTYCH Start by taping two sheets of watercolour paper together. Draw some wobbly circles that span both sheets of paper using a pencil.

  2. Small 2019 12 11 125445 agate%2bdiptych%2b2

Remove the tape and fill in some of the larger areas with paint using the large round brush. Let some sections bleed together.

  3. Small 2019 12 11 125450 agate%2bdiptych%2b3

Once the first layer is dry, fill in the rest of the white space. Choose slightly different colours for each half, so each painting is unique.

Now use the small round brush to add some small, wiggly lines for detail. You want the picture to resemble something found in nature, so avoid smooth lines. Add some wax-crayon lines for a rough texture.
