THEY ARE REALLY TWINS-THOUGH THEY ARE NOT ALIKE These afternoon blouses have an expensive look about them, with their open lacy pattern and pretty necklines. The hostess has chosen wool for her blouse, but her visitor used the same pattern and made her going-out-to-tea blouse in yellow cotton. The original blouse was knitted in turquoise blue. Emphasis is on the pattern of this wool lace blouse, dainty but not too "open." Knitted in a pastel shade it is the prettiest imaginable blouse for all afternoon occasions. This attractive cotton blouse is only another version of the wool lace blouse. To make it more "dressy" it has been given a crochet neckline with a neat little bow to .finish it off. The waistline is made like a blouse and tucks into the skirt. MEASUREMENTS Length, 181 ins. To fit a 34-in. bust size. Sleeve seam, 41- ins. TENSION Using No. 10 needles, 7 sts. to 1 in.

It is really remarkable what a difference the material you use will make to a design. In the photograph the girl is wearing the same wool lace blouse-only it's knitted in cotton. True, there are one or two differences as you will see if you look at the photograph. The turn-over collar has been replaced by a crocheted band finished off with a neat little bow, and the ribbing at the waist has been omitted. Apart from that they are the same design. Mercerized cotton is a very good alternative for wool, especially for jum-pers and blouses made for summer wear or pure "show" rather than warmth com-bined with smartness. The yarn has a silky finish and makes up into a light deli-cate fabric that delights the eye-it is also hard wearing and washes well. If you'd like to make the blouse in cot-ton rather than wool, this is how you do it. MATERIALS 7 balls of mercerised cotton, size 20. 2 No. 12 and 2 No. 11 knitting needles. A fine steel crochet hook. 8 small buttons. Cast on 114 sts. using No. 12 needles and omit the ribbed welt, but work in-stead 1 in. of st.st. (This to be turned back afterwards to form a hem for elastic.) Now work in patt. as given for the main part of the blouse, using No. 11 needles, but instead of working the num-ber of patterns stated continue until work measures 13 ins: from lower edge, ending with the 8th row of patt. Continue exactly as given for the 2-ply blouse, shaping shoulders at 19 ins. in-stead of 18 ins. Work front to correspond shaping neck at 18 ins. instead of 17 ins. For the sleeves cast on 86 sts. on No. 11 needles. Now work the inc. row straight away (thus omitting the ribbing) and con-tinue in patt. as given. Omit the collar, but work instead about 4 in. of fine d.c. round the neck edge to draw the neck up to about 141 ins. (front 81, back 6). Sew up shoulder seams, leaving the neck band and about 2 ins. of the shoul-der seam open. Fasten this opening with 4 small buttons and loops on each side. Work a d.c. border round each sleeve edge to correspond with the neck, draw-ing the edge up to about 9 2 ins. Thread elastic through the hem formed by turning up and stitching the st.st. border at lower edge. By the way, the lace stitch blouse made in wool can be worn inside or outside the skirt, whichever you prefer, but the blouse made in cotton must be worn tucked into the skirt as you can see in the photograph. You will notice that there is no ribbing to hold it firmly to your waist.
