I got fed up spending a fortune in the pet shop on good, strong collars for my llamas. So I've started to make my own - at a fraction of the price. The webbing and fittings are all very cheap and easy to find on ebay. My collars work out at less than a euro each. It's simple to make a collar. Here's how I do it.
Begin by cutting a length of nylon webbing. Measure around the animal's neck, then add half again. I make my llama collars from 1 meter of 50mm wide webbing. A dog will need less and also probably less thick webbing. Melt the ends by passing them quickly through the flame of a match or lighter. You need to do this to make sure they don't fray.
Attach the slide buckle at one end. Make sure its facing upwards (I use slightly shaped ones). Fold the webbing over the central part of the buckle then sew firmly in place. I use my machine and go backwards and forwards 6 or 7 times.
Here's another view of the slide buckle in place.
Right, time to slip one half of the collar fastener onto the webbing. This isn't sewn into place.
Thread the webbing back through the slide buckle.
Slip the D ring onto the webbing now. Uh oh, this photo has cut it off at the right hand side!! It goes between the slide buckle and the second half of the fastener that we sew into place in the next step.
Thread the second half of the fastener onto the webbing, fold over about 6 cm of webbing. Sew firmly close to the fastener (about 1 cm away). Slip the D ring up next to this seam, and then do another seam about 1 cm from the end of the folded over webbing. This forms a channel to keep the D ring from sliding around too much.
Here's the finished collar, every bit as tough and smart as a shop-bought one!
