I recently went for a trip to Aberdeen where I tried these 'Rowies'. They were freshly made from a bakers. I don't think you can buy proper Rowies anywhere but Aberdeen.
I recently went for a trip to Aberdeen where I tried these 'Rowies'. They were freshly made from a bakers. I don't think you can buy proper Rowies anywhere but Aberdeen.
Mix yeast, sugar & 1/2 the water. Leave to sit for 15 mins.
Sift flour & salt together.
Add the yeast mix to the flour mixture. Add enough water to make a soft dough.
Transfer the dough to a well floured surface & knead for approx 5 mins
Place dough into a bowl. Cover with cling film & allow to prove until doubled in size.
Cream the butter & lard together.
When the dough is risen, roll out on a floured surface. Spread 1/3 of the butter mixture over the dough, the then sprinkle lightly with flour.
Fold the dough in 3. Roll out again
Repeat steps 7 & 8 twice more.
Roll the dough out quite thinly & cut into squares.
Bring the four corners into the centre & shape into rounds. Do not over handle the dough.
Place the batteries onto a warm floured baking sheet & allow to prove for approx 40 mins.
Bake at 230/450 for 15-20 mins until golden & crispy on both sides.
Traditionally they are served with butter & jam.
