Favorite graphic t-shirt made into a new favorite skirt

About

I came across an old favorite t-shirt that was a gift from my dad and decided it would make an awesome skirt now. I am not one for following patterns so just winged it. I did know where I wanted it to fit was 36" so I started with that. Since t-shirts stretch they work perfect for a yoga style band. I used an old plain black t-shirt about the same feel as my graphic t-shirt. I even remembered to take A LOT of pictures :-)PS I am not a small gal. Just for reference I am 5'10" and 180. I love this style skirt because it works great for ALL sizes :-)

You Will Need (4 things)

  • Sewing Machine
  • matching Thread
  • Scissors
  • 2 T Shirt

Steps (10 steps, 90 minutes)

  1. 1

This is the graphic t I used. Cut the sleeves off of both shirts, this will be the band you will start with. I cut the t-shirt sleeves off, then cut the sides of the shirt off at an angle. Place a straight edge from the bottom corners to the top of the shoulder hole. Cut the graphic shirt 1st then lay that on the black shirt, since I cared more about the owls then plain black.

  2. 2

Since I wanted more of the graphic shirt for the band then black I cut the underarm seam out of all 4 sleeves, not the hemmed edge. The hemmed edge will become the bottom edge of your band. I made sure the top and side of the rectangle were square. The hemmed edge was not straight but it gave a good look to the finished shirt.

  3. 3

Sew the edges of 3 of your sleeves together making sure the hemmed edge is even. I started with a graphic sleeve then added the 2 black pieces first. After that I decided how much of the black I should cut off to add more of the blue shirt to the back. It is not all equal size pieces but I figured no one ever notices stuff like that but me. Since my waist is 36" I made the band 35" due to the stretchiness of the t-shirt.

  4. 4

Here is the final band with all 4 pieces sewn together.

  5. 5

I already sewed the 4 t-shirt piece together. Do not sew it into a tube, just one long rectangle. Wrap that rectangle around your waist, overlapped the ends. (You can see that better in the next picture). Mark both layers where they overlap. Pin together the top where the complete overlapping is.
Now attach the band piece to your bottom piece. Lay the skirt face out, lay your band over your skirt, like you would wear it, hold the top edges together and flip the band inside. Easy way to know which side should be facing what :-)Sew the band in place. I used a lot of pins for this step.

  6. 6

Fold band to the outside. I decided it needed a little something at the overlap. I cut a 1" strip from the back of the blue shirt and sewed it sandwiched between the layers. turn the skirt inside out and cut the extra fabric of the overlap. Turn right side out and your done:-)

  7. 7

Here is the look before the blue strip was added. I try my projects on a lot as I go to make alterations as needed.

  8. 8

That strip really added that last touch it needed.

    The back

  10. 10

Except for the back of the graphic t-shirt, which will be part of another skirt, this is all that is left of those 2 shirts. Since cutting up shirt can make you sneeze a lot, it utilize some of the larger pieces as tissues before they make it to my coffee trash cans.
