Hey there, can you introduce yourself?

Hello everybody, my name is Sarah. At work, I am a design-engineer. At home, I am a wife and a mother of 2 funny and lovely kids. Besides that, I am a complete crochet addict. I never leave the house without yarn and a crochet hook. I never waste time because I can crochet everywhere. At the train station, on the train, in the car (when I’m not driving :-P) and of course at home.

Tell us a bit about the book?

The book is filled with different kinds of cactuses, inspired by real cactus species. But you can mix and match colours, cactus plants and flowers as you like. That way invent your own species.

What was the inspiration behind it?

My first crocheted cactus was a gift for someone. It wasn’t long until I started coming up with new and colourful variations. I don't have green fingers, so these are a perfect alternative. I can put them where I would normally forget to water my plants. I also discovered that they are perfect for kids’ rooms.

Which is your favourite project?

My favourite is the Parodia Scopa. I like the look of it and how it can be made in different sizes, depending on how many balls you make and how big your soil base is.

What is your craft space like?

My craft space is a mess. I crochet whilst sitting on my sofa, so the yarn is all over the place when I first start. My writing space is more tidy. On my table I have just my computer and my draft-papers. At the beginning, all my patterns are written by hand.

Have you always been creative?

I grew up in a very creative family, so I have been drawing and sewing since I was a kid. I got into crochet later in my adult life. Crochet is easy in a way. There is no need any kind of machinery and I can take my craft supplies with me on-the-go.

When did you first start crafting?

When I was pregnant with my daughter I found a pattern for a crocheted elephant. I thought they would be cute as table decorations for her christening. And I thought - how difficult can it be to crochet?
Well, it was hard and ambitious, but I was stubborn. The week before the christening I had made 11 big elephants. None of them were the same size or shape. My mother did the 12th one because I ran out of time. It was the only one that looked even slightly like the pattern.

Who are your crafty heroes?

Oh there are many brilliant authors. I have no specific favourite. I learned to crochet on YouTube. And I learn a lot when I try other author’s patterns.
My biggest crafty hero must be my mum. She really had a lot of different hobbies at the same time and she inspired me throughout my childhood. I can’t think of a single craft hobby I haven’t tried out. But nothing has got me hooked (haha) as much as crochet. My mum was one of the first people to test out this book. I have never seen her more proud than the day she received the finish result. The book was released just one week before she passed away - by that time she was still testing my ideas and patterns.

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere. In nature, at the florist, at toy stores, movies and on social media (eg. Instagram, Pinterest and Etsy).

What's next for you?

My second book with succulents has just been published in Danish. So for now, I think I'm over plants...at least for a while! In the meantime I am back where I started - with animals.
