Join Lucy Knisley for a #CraftRoomTour of her shared studio in Chicago.
The sunlight! Also very fond of the desk I made.
Tell us about your space
I share it with my husband, but he's rarely in there. The studio is where I work, mostly on my graphic novels, but also the occasional children's book, illustration commission and craft project.
What have you done to make your space cosy, beautiful or inspiring?
When we moved in, this room was dark green and had been used as a movie watching room by the previous occupant. We painted it a bright sunny cream color, and I constructed my dream desk surrounded by art I love.
How do you keep organized?
I take ten minutes every morning that I work to tidy my space. It keeps me from getting distracted and bummed out while I work.
Any tips & tricks for organising supplies?
Move house three times in one year! It really cuts down on your excess clutter!
Which are your favourite possessions and are there any of your own creations on display?
I keep all my published books on the shelf beside me while I work. It's a nice reminder of what I've done and how far I've come.
How do you organise your inspiration and ideas?
In my sketchbook and the notes on my phone, mostly.
Where do you look for inspiration?
My own life and experiences. Right now my baby is lending a lot of inspiration.
If you had three wishes, what would you do to make it the dream space?
I'd add an extra room to our condo so that we'd have a guest room and I would feel better about taking up a whole room for my work while my visiting mother sleeps on the couch.
