Description

If you've treated yourself to a super slim laptop, the last thing you want to do is bulk it up with a giant case. Luckily, it's super easy to sew your own skinny case which you can slip it in to and protect it from scratches.

Instructions

  1. Small 102782 2f2014 06 24 182624 img 0783

Start by making your template. Place your laptop in the middle of a large piece of paper and draw around the outline. Add a 5/8" seam allowance to all of the edges apart from the bottom edge and then add an extra inch to the top edge. Cut this template out.

  2. Small 102782 2f2014 06 24 182631 img 0784

Fold a piece of felt in half and pin the template on top, with the bottom edge against the folded edge of felt. Cut around the outline and then remove the template.

  3. Small 102782 2f2014 06 27 171121 img 0788

Fold the felt around your laptop and pin along the sides, making sure it has a nice snug fit. Remove the laptop, reposition the pins so they're nice and neat and then slip your laptop in to it again, making sure you've not made it too tight.

  4. Small 102782 2f2014 06 27 171134 img 0789

Repeat the first two steps to cut the main fabric and place it to one side.

  5. Small 102782 2f2014 06 27 231650 img 0790

Sew along the edges of felt, removing the pins as you go.

  6. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 055514 img 0791

Slip the laptop inside to check the size is right one last time.

  7. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 055632 img 0792

Cut off the excess felt from the sides.

  8. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 055828 img 0794

Fold the outer fabric in half, so that the wrong sides are facing out and place the felt sleeve on top. Using the felt as a guide, pin along the edges of the outer fabric so that it's the same width as the felt sleeve.

  9. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 055952 img 0795

Place the felt sleeve inside the outer fabric sleeve.

  10. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060032 img 0796

Place the laptop inside the sleeve and then fold back and pin the edges of the outer sleeve so that they're same height as the laptop.

  11. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060219 img 0797

Remove the laptop and felt sleeve and sew along the edges of the outer sleeve, removing the pins as you go.

  12. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060246 img 0798

Cut off the excess fabric from the edges of the outer sleeve.

  13. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060350 img 0799

Turn the outer sleeve inside out so that the right sides of the fabric are facing out.

  14. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060412 img 0800

Fold the edges of the felt sleeve back so that they're the same height as the laptop.

  15. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060438 img 0801

Pick a pretty button to match your case and cut a length of thin elastic in a corresponding colour.

  16. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060726 img 0804

Stitch the button in place with a needle and some embroidery floss or thick thread.

  17. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060545 img 0802

Place the felt sleeve inside the outer sleeve and pin around the edges. Make a loop with the elastic, long enough to reach the button when it stretches, and place in between the two sleeves in the center of the opening.

  18. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060659 img 0803

Stitch along the top edges of your sleeve, securing the loop in place.

  19. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060946 img 0813

Slip your laptop in one final time.

  20. Small 102782 2f2014 06 28 060957 img 0806

Stretch the elastic over the button to secure the laptop and you're all done!
