Crochet Hacking

While crochet hacking is about thinking of new ways to remake existing clothes, it’s also about mending. This tee had a hair dye incident and got a big bleached patch on the bottom at the back. Having had it for a long time I was loathe to get rid of it so I chopped off the bleached bit and revamped the neckline so that it can have a whole new life. I used a DK cotton but you can use any yarn you like. A DK weight is better for this kind of transformation as it isn’t too bulky. Instructions

  1. Small 2021 04 14 160123 sc0a 5210

To cut the bottom, fold the t-shirt in half lengthways and cut at the desired height. It’s worth trying it on first and making a mark with a washable pen or tailors chalk so that you don’t make it too short. To cut the neck, make a snip through and cut around following the ribbed jersey of the neckline.

  2. Small 2021 04 14 160359 sc0a 5207

Using whichever colour yarn you choose to make the top stripe, thread the needle and work back stitches approximately 1cm (1/2in) in from the top cut edge of the neck. Join in same colour yarn with 1ch, then crochet 1 to 2dc around each stitch. You may find that you need a mixture of both depending on how wide your back stitch is.

  3. Small 2021 04 14 160428 sc0a 5208

To make the scallop edge work: ch1 (does not count as st), (dc, skip 1 st, [tr, ch1, tr, ch1, tr] in next st, skip 1 st) all around the neck, ss in first dc. Fasten off.

  4. Small 2021 04 14 160411 sc0a 5209

Repeat step 2 around the bottom edge of the tee and then work 4 rows of dc in colours of your choice.
