Description

The foundation double crochet is a technique where you work the foundation chain and the actual stitch, at the same time. This allows you to work a beginning row for a project, to a desired length.

Instructions

  1. Small 113342 2f2016 02 08 215149 foundation%2bdc%2b1

    Begin with chain 2.

  2. Small 113342 2f2016 02 08 215458 foundation%2bdc%2b2

Yarn over, insert hook into the first chain (the one furthest away from the hook), yarn over, and pull up a loop. You now have 3 loops on your hook.

  3. Small 113342 2f2016 02 08 215600 foundation%2bdc%2b3

Yarn over, pull through 1 loop. This is actually creating the "chain" portion of your foundation row.

  4. Small 113342 2f2016 02 08 215707 foundation%2bdc%2b4

Yarn over, pull through 2 loops.

  5. Small 113342 2f2016 02 08 215934 foundation%2bdc%2b5

Yarn over, pull through last 2 loops. This completes the first foundation double crochet.

This is a view of the bottom, and the arrow points to where you will be inserting your hook to begin the next stitch. The stitch that the arrow is pointing at is the "chain" portion of the foundation double crochet that was made in step 3.

  7. Small 113342 2f2016 02 08 220200 foundation%2bdc%2b7

Yarn over and insert your hook into the "chain" on the bottom of the piece. Yarn over and pull up a loop.

  8. Small 113342 2f2016 02 08 220411 foundation%2bdc%2b8

After you pull up a loop through the chain, you will have 3 loops on your hook again.

  9. Small 113342 2f2016 02 08 220512 foundation%2bdc%2b9

Yarn over, pull through 1 loop.

  10. Small 113342 2f2016 02 08 220559 foundation%2bdc%2b10

Yarn over, pull through 2 loops.

  11. Small 113342 2f2016 02 08 220749 foundation%2bdc%2b11

Yarn over, pull through last 2 loops. This is your second completed foundation double crochet.

As you continue to work the foundation double crochet stitches, you will be beginning each one in the closest chain stitch to your hook. The arrow is indicating what the "chain" stitches will look like on the bottom of the piece.

This is what a row of foundation double crochet looks like. You can make the length of this row as long as you need for the project that you will be beginning. To begin your next row, when the foundation row is finished, simply chain 2 and turn your work, if you are working back and forth. If you are working in rounds, you can bring your first and last stitches together, and join them at the top with a slip stitch.
