My sister is married, and moving to Japan. She recently has stopped working, so she no longer has to wear a uniform. She wants to wear more skirts, and the weather is going to be nice most of the year. For Christmas, I made her two skirts. The purple/cream and the Black/white, both Chevron. Since she is an Officer's wife, I made the skirts of a more modest length as to be functional for Military spouse functions.

1 1/2 yards of material. If you want to buy more for wiggle room you can, but this is the bare minimum. If you mess up you likely won't have enough. The skirt is a half circle. I started in the middle, due to the pattern. You want the chevron lines to hang horizontal when finished. I almost made a huge mistake with that.
Since the material is double over. You will not be starting on a fold. (otherwise the lines will hang wrong) so when marking the waistline, you will start at the edge of the material. and you will only mark a 1/4 circle. (being 1/4 of a full circle, or in other words, half of a half-circle). the front of the skirt i left whole, but the back i cut in 2, for the zipper. the cut waist for this skirt was 29in, length 20in final waist 28in, length 19in
Here it has been attached at the sides. and lays open to show the full half circle. Everything has a 1/2in seam. that is my comfort zone. Keep it in mind
looking up close you can see that the lines don't wholly match up. if you can get them to, fantastic. If not, don't worry. since it hangs at the sides and is flowing, it would barely be noticeable, unless it were being looked for.
the built in slip I used almost the same measurements as the outer skirt. I made it 2 inches shorter. cut waist 29in, cut length 18in final waist 28in, final length 17in
attaching the slip waist to the outer skirt waist. yes it is very see through, but when being worn it isn't.
You can see it here from a distance!! coming together. I don't have a close up picture, but I attached the Back seam of the slip to the Back seam of the outer skirt. It makes it easier for when attaching the zipper, and for any tricky breezes that my occur. I then sewed up the back, leaving room for the zipper.
for the waistband, I used 2 layers of slip, and 1 of chevron. the chevron here is vertical, thought it would give it a nice look, and it did. what I did was overlap the rightside of the chevron with the slip by a 1/2 in, then folded it over and sewed the ends and bottom closed. the initial width of it was to be 3 inches, but it looked terrible. so i folded it down about to 2 inches. the belt loops are only about 1in wide, and 2in long. I attached the beltloops to the top of the waistband, and secured them just slightly at the bottom. that way when attaching to the skirt i wouldn't have any problems
Attaching the waistband. like any other, put the rightsides together, and make sure the backseam/zipper openings aligned.
As stated in step 8, i made the waistband to wide. I only figured it out too late, so i merely folded it over and secured it.
here is the waistband attached!! see how vertical works well with the horizontal.
You then attach the zipper like instructions say to. I used a 7-9 inch zipper.
Adding the hook and eye. hard to see, i know, because i used a black one.
the belt to go with the skirt. I made it be 60 inches long and 1inch wide. I sewed it up in a long tube, and had to use (what i use for elastic or a safety pin) to snake it right side out. i then folded the ends and secured them, then ironed it flat.
Not pictured sorry!! the hem. for such a thin material, i used a rolled hem. If you have a rolled hem foot, fantastic. I did not so i did mine carefully. DO THIS FOR BOTH OUTER SKIRT AND SLIP!! I marked 1in, so when folded it was 1/2 in. sewed it at a 1/4in seam. I then folded it again, up to where the initial 1in marking was. making sure the existing seam, was just on the underside of the fold. then sewed it at a 1/8in seam. trim whatever excess strands or visible parts for the hem.
my sister does not want any pictures of her on here so i have one of me. This is the second skirt i made her, exactly the same except color. I hope ya'll enjoy this skirt!! it was jolly fun to make, and gorgeous. My sister loved them.
