I love everything Alice! The book, the illustrations (especially Camille Rose Garcia's modern interpretation of the original story), the characters, and of course, the movies (Disney's 2D version and Tim Burton's recent adaptation). Like many others, Lewis Carroll's story about a little girl finding herself lost in a magical land has served as a creative inspiration for a lot of my own personal projects. What better way to get domestic and honor our dear Alice than by recreating her iconic black bow headband?

Like many others, Lewis Carroll's story about a little girl finding herself lost in a magical land has served as a creative inspiration for a lot of my own personal projects. What better way to get domestic and honor our dear Alice than by recreating her iconic black bow headband?
There should be three main pieces for this project: the ribbon cut into two lengths, 1.5 and 34 inches, and the fabric piece measuring 6 x 3.5 in. (or bigger/smaller if you prefer).
Fold the fabric piece in half lengthwise with the shiny outer surface facing inwards, and stitch the edges shut with black thread (I used blue in the tutorial to help show the details) leaving about an inch long opening in the side. Knot the ends of the thread and trim.
Use a chopstick (or pen, pencil, any skinny pointed object works well) to invert the stitched fabric piece. The easiest way to do this is to push the chopstick in one of the corners of the rectangle, gather the fabric around it, and push it through the inch long opening created in the 1st step, turning it inside out.
Completely invert the fabric piece and insert the chopstick again to smooth out the edges and sharpen the corners.
Use the glue gun (or fabric glue) to seal the opening shut.
Gather the center of the bow by pleating it carefully and put a small amount of glue on the back.
Attach the bow to the long piece of ribbon about 14 in. from the end (the bow will be on the side of your head when wearing, but it can be glued in the center if you prefer wearing the bow in the middle of your head).
Finally, use the small piece of ribbon to secure the center of the bow and glue both ends to the back of the longer piece of ribbon attached to the back of the bow).
When finished, the back should look like this.
That's it! Put on your favorite blue dress (or anything, really! It matches practically everything) and tie it around your head for the perfect touch to any outfit!
Tips: - Knot the ends of the ribbons to help prevent fraying. - Try making it in different colors, or use patterned fabric for a fun twist. - Make one with a small bow--or a huge, couture-sized bow!--by decreasing/increasing the size of the fabric piece used.
